Where is Coffee Grown?

This is possibly one of the most used phrases, in all languages, around the world.
It conjures up so many positive emotions. Friendship, love, compassion, honesty - the list goes on.
Burt Lancaster once famously said ‘I judge a restaurant by the bread and the coffee’.
Coffee is the most popular drink worldwide, after water and in 2020/2021 around 166.63 million 60 kilogram bags of coffee were consumed.
In the UK over £1 billion was spent on coffee with consumption averaging at 2800 cups of coffee per person per year - staggering numbers by any standards.
But where exactly is coffee grown?
Globally, there are three primary coffee growing regions – Central and South America, Africa and The Middle East and Southeast Asia.
These regions are all located along the equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, widely known as the “Bean or Coffee Belt".
More than 70 countries produce coffee, but the majority of global output comes from just the top five producers: Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, and Ethiopia.
The largest producer is Brazil, who produce more than a third of the world's coffee.
For the coffee plant to grow, the location needs to have the right altitude, weather and soil. Once all of these factors are met, the plant can begin to grow and produce the coffee beans that we love.
But, have you ever wondered exactly where is coffee from?
The plant that produces the beans that make our much loved coffee is called the Coffea plant.
It is bush-like and if not trimmed can grow up to 8 metres tall.
Typically the coffee plant lives about 30 to 40 years and coffee beans are actually a seed which is found inside cherries that grow on the plant.
It is common for the coffee plants to grow in pairs and coffee farmers have to wait until the plant produces coffee beans at a rate which is sustainable.
Picking the cherries is a crucial part of the coffee production process. Once ripped, they turn a bright red colour and are ready to be picked. This can be done mechanically, however, the best quality coffee will be handpicked.
